A Pace's Point Original

Peggy Peterson is a member of the board of directors for Pace's Point Fire & Rescue. More importantly, she and her husband, Palmer, helped to establish the fire department and make it what it is today.

Peggy was born in Montgomery and she's lived in Nashville and Atlanta. Peggy married Palmer Peterson in 1973 and they moved to Auburn. Peggy worked for the Auburn City Schools and Palmer was an engineer with Uniroyal. Several of their friends and colleagues were leasing lots from Alabama Power at Lake Martin, so Peggy and Palmer leased a lot off Impy Road. They were "weekenders" and stayed in a tent while building their cabin. According to Peggy, their property had the biggest concrete slab on the lake! In July of 1975, she and Palmer moved here permanently. Their house was a shell and they finished the inside while living in it.

A number of forest fires and an occasional cabin fire occurred as more people came to the area. The only available equipment was a forestry truck, a backhoe, and a rake at the Red Ridge Fire Department located at Stillwaters. A small group of local residents including the Petersons, Dorman & June Dennis, Guy Slayden, Budd Watts, and Carmen & Harry Brown started working on obtaining a forestry truck and raising funds for Pace's Point. This small group of people grew to about 100 members and Pace's Point Fire & Rescue was born.

By 1980, Peggy was working for Alabama Power (and she just retired in April, 2000.) Peggy was the first Secretary/Treasurer for Pace's Point; however, when Palmer became extremely ill, she turned the job over to Carmen Brown. The members of the fire department accumulated $10,000.00 which was used to build Station 1. Peggy says "People will make Pace's Point Fire & Rescue grow and prosper! My heart has always been in it and it always will!"
